If it was a conscious choice, you did so between right and wrong. You can't map totals in any meaningful way using the choropleth map type. Sorry, but that's a fact whether tennis fans know the reality or not.Kenneth Fieldhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16738467752479352030noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8123225361504762353.post-25726253013533449772013-12-21T07:14:52.461-08:002013-12-21T07:14:52.461-08:00I do a heck of a lot of the 'education' st...I do a heck of a lot of the 'education' stuff. Have done for 20+ years. Some people need carrots, some sticks. Not sure anyone needs another infographic ;-)Kenneth Fieldhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16738467752479352030noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8123225361504762353.post-22262125396165679362013-12-20T12:03:37.874-08:002013-12-20T12:03:37.874-08:00I don't know s**t about maps (and as you proba...I don't know s**t about maps (and as you probably know, i'm using the api that google released to us plebs) but I'm well aware of the difference between absolute numbers and per capita numbers, and that was a conscious choice. Tennis fans know full well that on a per capita basis, the US (for instance) is pretty bad, and tend to be more interested in the percentage of top players who are from their country of interest. If you're watching the US Open, the number of US players in the draw is the same regardless of the current US population.

Also, if we're aiming for accuracy here:
- my last name is misspelled
- WTA stands for Women's Tennis Association, not "World Tennis Association"Jeff Sackmannhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02206195621318490451noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8123225361504762353.post-86218785072321548222013-12-19T17:10:31.782-08:002013-12-19T17:10:31.782-08:00Points well made as ever; your frustration is tang...Points well made as ever; your frustration is tangible even on this side of the world! May I suggest that an online decision support tool, well publicised-and 'Liked' widely!-might help? A flow chart? An (and whisper it) infographic?
As I've drifted onward in my career I've found my earlier, youthful raging against crimes against, or using, the map has been replaced by a slow dawning of realisation that perhaps it us our job to not just critique poor product but to educate poor producers? A harder job I admit and no doubt equally thankless. I'm not fully converted yet but maybe we hold the key...
Keep up the good work
Reamonn RMFhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14272576621965248958noreply@blogger.com
